How One Army Sentry Dog Helped This Soldier Through His Time Serving
Duke, my four-legged pal and member of the K-9 unit in Okinawa, Japan, was introduced to Pine Tree State in April 1970. He had been a military lookout man dog for 5 years and had 5 tours of Vietnam behind him. therewith abundant service time, Duke was well-seasoned.
During our initial field coaching session, explosions were lit all around United States. My job was to hit the bottom, and canopy and shield Duke’s eyes and ears with my left arm. My thinking was somewhat slow that day. perhaps it had been the japanese brew from the night before, however once the explosions went off, I froze. Duke, on the opposite hand, lay down and waited on behalf of me to hide his head with my arm. My coaching slowly kicked in and after I looked down at him, he was looking at Pine Tree State together with his massive brown eyes as if to mention, Get your behind down and canopy my face.
When I finally created it to the bottom and coated Duke’s head, I raised my arm to peek into his eyes. They appeared to say, “Boy, I certain got myself a true winner now. He’s about to want some work.” (Have a brand new puppy? Here’s the way to train it properly.)
Given Duke’s expertise, the eight weeks of coaching went quick and straightforward.
Near the tip of my service, I received a greeting card from my people. It read, “We miss you! Happy twentieth birthday! we tend to hope to ascertain you soon!” tucked within the cardboard was alittle note telling Pine Tree State that my gran had died that week. i used to be therefore unhappy once reading the note that I didn’t desire doing something. however I had to travel out on patrol that night with Duke.
